My new eBook 'Harmonic Patterns for the Bassist' (working title) is in production at the moment......

My thinking in writing this book is to give aspiring bassists and experienced bassists something to practice and think about. When practicing in order for it to be effective you must always think about what you're playing. The exercises in this book are designed to help you do precisely that.

I'll keep you posted on it's progress.

Bass Transcription JOSIE from AJA Steely Dan.

Hi All.

I thought I'd share with you a transcription I did of one of my all time favourite bass lines.

Josie by Steely Dan. This features on the AJA album (1977). The bass player on this album is the great Chuck Rainey with Jim Keltner on drums. What a team!

The bass part was actually written out on the session by Walter Becker and he doubles the bass line on guitar. According to Donald Fagen the wanted the "TV cop show sound"........

I hope you enjoy it. If you've never heard it before, I URGE you to search it out. VERY funky & VERY musical.

Bass Workshop

Hi All.

Sales of the new e-Book BASS WORKSHOP are going very well indeed. It's selling all over the world and is very satisfying to know that bass players are interested in learning music and getting better on their instrument.

Learning music will do this for you. The book is all rudimentary knowledge of skills you will need to function as a pro bassist and make the transition to 'Musician'. Covering topics such as:

  • Reading standard notation NO TAB.
  • Understanding harmony and the way it works.
  • Chord tones and major & minor inversions.
  • Bass line construction.
  • Bass styles & chart geography.
  • Following a chord chart.
  • Tumbao lines & exercises.
  • Beat placement, playing with the kick drum.
  • Soloing ideas using chord tones and alternate rhythms.
  • Rhythmical awareness.

I have purposely not gone deep into any of the subjects mentioned above as I urge you to dig deeper for yourself. The book is priced at £5.00. At over 60 pages, it's an absolute bargain. Here is a testimonial of BASS WORKSHOP by guitarist and head of guitar at Tech music schools London UK and Guitar Magazine columnist John Wheatcroft......

"Simon Gouding’s abilities as both world-class bass player and top-rate musician are clearly evident to all that have had the pleasure to see and hear him play. Looking through his new book, Bass Workshop, I can safely say that he can add the skills of effortless communicator and natural educator to his impressive CV. This book guides the serious student through a range of effective exercises, etudes and pieces that are both fluent and cohesive, with a clear sense of progression guided along the way with appropriate words of wisdom. This all adds up to a significant body of study that has true musical relevance and is inspirational and self-rewarding…." John Wheatcroft

Familia BASS PLAY ALONG.

The 1st album was released in 2010. Here is the title track 'Familia' mixed without bass. You can download the track from SoundCloud and also copy the charts over and print them.

My main influence when recording the bass part on this was the great Cuban band Los Van Van. Merging a Funk feel with a Songo feel. The solo's go into more of a funk feel. All the chord changes are written on the lead sheet as are the main bass figures. The bass I used on the session was my Yamaha TRB5.

I supply the lead sheet rather that giving you the complete bass part because I thought it would be good for you to come up with your own bass lines.

Download the mp3 here.

You can check out some page previews here on the left. My aim for this book is help you become a more musical bass player. I have purposely not dove too deeply into each subject as I really urge you to discover more about each subject for yourself. I have merely scratched the surface here but hopefully given you enough information for you to practise and inspire you to dig much much deeper for yourself.

I've always been a massive believer in learning the FACTS of music in order to get better on your instrument. In this book I present the facts of music, Nothing more. The language you need to know to function as a professional bassist. The information you are expected to know to play  effective bass parts and get hired as a musician. Harmonic language, Reading notation, rhythmic awareness, style examples, transposition, improvising, introduction to soloing and playing in a more musical way.

Thanks for checking it out. Please feel free to contact me or comment on any of these things.

All the very best,

Simon.

Harmonised Major Scale Arpeggio Patterns.

Hi There.

Welcome to the new lesson. This is based on a very simple chord progression found in thousands of tunes. Based on the harmonised major scale in C.

The harmonised scale is basically any major scale played in chords.

Cmaj7    Dm7    Em7    Fmaj7    G7    Am7    Bm7b5    Cmaj7

When playing this avoid using a metronome to start with. Get it under your fingers first. Place your fingers at one finger per fret. Don't bunch up your fingers, try to avoid fret-buzz, alternate your picking fingers on every note.

Interesting.........The First Electric Bass Guitar.

This is interesting for all Bassists......

This is the first electric bass guitar. The Tutmarc AudioVox 736 dated 1937.

Specs:

Solid body: fretted bass guitar.
Body & Neck: Black Walnut.
Fingerboard: Purpleheart.
Pick ups & electronics: One single coil pick up.

Many people credit Leo Fender and the Fender musical instrument company with the creation of the electric bass guitar with the advent of the Fender Precision Bass in 1951. However as the Fender P Bass was the first mass produced bass guitar, The Fender company was by no means the inventor of the electric bass.

That innovation lies with a Seattle based musician and inventor Paul H (Bud) Tutmarc. Tutmarc was experimenting with reducing the size of the double bass and in 1935 he built the electric upright bass but the crunch year for the bass guitar was 1937 when he developed the Audiovox model 736 "Electronic bass fiddle". It was designed to be played in the horizontal position and therefore is the first electric bass guitar as we know it.

Bad timing, Bad luck were the main reason why Mr Tutmarc didn't get the accolades he deserved. The 736 certainly wasn't a commercial success. The price was massive in 1937 the Audiovox cost $65.00 and en extra $75.00 for the matching 936 amplifier making it simply out of reach of many many musicians. It also came out just before the outbreak of World War II when the whole of guitar manufacturing was deemed "Non Essential" plus it really didn't fit in to any of the styles of music at that time.

Paul Tutmarc's Audiovox 736.............Way ahead of it's time?

New Album. OUT NOW.

Hello Folks.

Well, it's been over 3 years since I released my debut studio album Familia. I've been, and continue to be overwhelmed by the response and very kind comments. I'm really glad you enjoy it.

So.......Here goes!

The brand new album Open Window is out NOW. If you enjoyed Familia then you'll LOVE this CD. It features 14 new original tracks with many guest artists. Due to touring, sessions and gigs etc it's taken quite some time to get it completed. But I'm over the moon with the finished results.

The album has already been featured on PBS's Fiesta Jazz in Melbourne, Australia as well as Samia Panni's Brazilian music show in the USA. Again, as with Familia all the guests recorded their parts in their own studios and sent them to me over the internet. I really love this way of working. I always end up re building the track once the parts are slotted into the project though :-) plus many last minute decisions, last minute tunes written, last minute mix changes happened but it all turned out better than I could have ever expected thanks to some truly world class musicians who shared their hearts & souls on this album.

I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

You can buy the CD or download the album (However, I would suggest the CD so you can the experience the full package, artwork, design & liner notes) here......

You Can still purchase Familia too.

Taurus Bass Amplification & Pedals.

Hey All.

It's been a while since my last blog due to the fact that I've been touring with the Temptations for the past 2 months and trying to finish my 2nd solo album.

All seems to be coming together very well indeed.

Earlier in the year I was approached by a great new company over in Poland called Taurus.

Tito Dalmedo & myself had been in touch with them when finding onboard pre amps for the SG signature bass. We installed the Taurus TM1. Which consisted of master volume, blend, bass, treble and a punch switch. Sounds truly awesome.

Taurus asked me to consider joining their list of endorsees. I jumped at the opportunity. After liaising with Anna & Bruce at The Bass Barn UK I chose my perfect bass rig.

This consists of,

The Taurus Qube 450.

The Qube is a very lightweight powerful amp. 450W into 4 ohm. Active & passive inputs, bass, treble & middle knobs with contour switches plus the MLO system. This boosts the frequency range you select without boosting the volume.

The Taurus Slimline 112 & 210 Cabinets.

Taurus TUX BL Compressor & ZEBU Reverb/Delay pedals.

Bass player out there. I URGE you to check this gear out. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Bass Professor Magazine 'Familia' review. (Germany). 2011.

Familia - Simon Goulding

(www.reverbnation.com/simongouldingmusic) CH

Familia Testimonials.

Bass Guitar Magazine. September 2010. UK.

"As unsung UK bass players go, they don't get much more talented than Lancashire born Simon Goulding. A solid sideman for the likes of the Bee Gees, Engelbert Humperdinck, Joe Longthorne and Rick Astley, he reveals his top notch jazz skills on his debut solo album, Familia. And it's a set bursting with sophisticated Chick Corea Elektric Band style jazz fusion with a strong undercurrent of Cuban and latin grooves, combined with some dazzling bass playing. A serious 6 string bassist, Gouldings sound is very much that of John Patitucci, with a singing solo style combined with a fizzing slap technique. Writing and programming all the tunes on the album, he also demonstrates his ability to create interlocking polyrhythms, counterpoint bass parts and shifting harmonic layers. It's this that shows the real depths of his musicianship. Even when things edge a little too close to smooth jazz on 'Galeria', Gouldings inventive ideas still make for diverting listening. Joined by trumpeter Adam Linsley, Tenorist Mat Sibley, guitarists Alan Wormald & Nik Harrison and percussionist Andy Blakeley, this is more than a one-man-show though when he does decide to cover all the bases himself, like on the cheeky funk workout 'Bass Face', he once again shows his full command of both bass and musical surroundings. Familia is an ambitious project which more than matches up to albums by many household name bassists, to which that of Simon Goulding should be added".

Musician Magazine. Autumn 2010. UK

"Hugely versatile bass ace. Originally from the Lancashire village of Coppull, Simon started playing at the age of 9 and studied at Wigan & Leigh college and Middlesex University. An established session player, he has performed with such artists as The Bee Gees, Engelbert Humperdinck, David Essex, PP Arnold and Sheila Ferguson. A published music educator who has held improvisation workshops at the university of York and Middlesborough College, he can now add this instrumental album to his extensive career credits. Simon shows even greater prowess (programming, keyboards, percussion) on this Cuban influenced set, ably supported by Adam Linsley (trumpet) and Mat Sibley (sax), his playing is precise, mature and mightily impressive across its 12 cuts of slick jazz, funk and latino-rock".

"Familia is an eclectic journey, from the very Latin to the very funky and everything in between, telling stories with different flavors textures and colors. Get on board and let Simon be your tour guide".

SAUL ZAVARCE
PRODUCER & PRESENTER 'FIESTA JAZZ'

                                           MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.

"Simon Goulding's new album "Familia" deserves more than a cursory listen. There are layers here.
First time through you might think the common thread is Goulding's exquisite musicianship and ear for rhythm (he composed all the tunes).
It's really a tour through the world of his emotions, and it's only through time spent that you can get inside the thread.
Perhaps this bears mentioning because the title cut is as engaging as one could imagine. You won't sit still. When you get to cut #4, though, you hear this pensive, not quite moody side, given to reflection shaded with a sense of wonder. When Miles Davis said, "Space," Simon Goulding was obviously listening.
It's in the rhythm where he's most at home, though, as you'll hear in Parque Central (just as an example).
For this bass player, composer, arranger and sought-after sideman, Goulding is showing us that he has an acute sense of the whole, his imagined end result, and an artistic sensibility that guides him there inexorably."

The Barker Bass.

Here's how I became aware of the BVB (Barker Vertical Bass)........................

It was a couple of years ago now, I was looking at various bass guitar makers & pages on MySpace when I stumbled upon Barker Basses. I was instantly intrigued. A bass guitar played vertically?? I had seen various bass players play with there bass at almost a vertical position before, namely Carlos Del Puerto from Irakere but I'd never seen a bass like this before.

I instantly contacted Barker basses to say "Hey, nice instruments". I then received a message from Lee Barker thanking me for my interest and remained in contact with Lee throughout the passing months.

I was then approached by Lee to become an endorser of the BVB. Needless to say I jumped at the opportunity. The Barker I play is a Custom B1 5 string Fretless.
Here is the spec....

Ebony Fingerboard, Cherry & Alder chambered body, Gotoh tuners, Seymour Duncan J bass style passive electronics, Rotosound nylon tru bass strings.

Check out these exquisite handmade instruments by Lee Barker of Redmond, Oregon, USA at.
